Prodigy step into the future

October 14, 2009

After last week’s news that Empire of the Sun will lead the Future Music Festival comes the announcement that UK firestarters the Prodigy and Franz Ferdinand will join the fun at Ascot Racecourse on February 28.

Since rising out of the underground rave scene in the early 90s, the Prodigy disappeared after releasing their international chart-topping 1997 album, The Fat of the Land, only to hit back in 2004 with Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunner and this year’s Invaders Must Die.

Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand have made every post a winner since bursting on the scene with their excellent self-titled debut album in 2004. Perth fans last witnessed Alex Kapranos and his gang playing a brilliant headlining set at Southbound in January.

That tasty trio will head a bill featuring top international DJs, including David Guetta (of chart-topping Sexy Bitch and Ibiza fame), German electro-dance duo Booka Shade, house music guru Erick Morillo and Germany’s so-called king of techno Sven Vath.

More Germanic sounds come via Boys Noize, while the UK offers Above & Beyond, DJ John Digweed and the polarising Does It Offend You, Yeah? Iranian-American techno DJ Dubfire will also appear.

Earlybird tickets are on sale from October 22 from Ticketmaster and all the usual outlets.

Single on October 13th?

October 13, 2009

According to Amazon there will be a release on October 13th. The name of the release is TBA (to be announced). I doubt it’s going to be full album release. I rather suppose it’s new single is appoaching. I place my bet on World’s on Fire. Unstoppable (mescaline) goes next in my bets..

Meanwhile the Second Division is waking up from deadly sleep. We’ve uploaded mosly all old stuff from “Siberian Plague” era to our last.fm page. I should admit there is a progress with our last.fm listeners, which is a big surprise.  There is a couple more of old tracks to upload, and then there will be nothing to upload except the new stuff. Right, besides own material I’m still working on some Prodigy remixes, mostly old and classic tracks. I’m not a fan of recreating new Prodigy tracks, so, I’d rather wait for the official release and cut it down to small pieces.

See ya!

D.A.F. Gold Und Liebe 1981, Virgin

August 30, 2009

daf“ IF I could only have one album to listen to forever it might be ‘Astral Weeks’ by Van Morrison, and as far as albums that really changed my life, both ‘Violator’ and ‘Screamedelica’ were big ones. But as far as an album that I keep going back to, and one that has inspired my own production, I choose this D.A.F. masterpiece from 1981. Every single thing I love about music is captured perfectly on these ten tracks. It’s electronic and totally groove-based, stripped-down machine music, but it never gets boring and it is incredibly human and warm. This is real trance, real body music; it’s electro-pop but without resorting to pop frameworks.
“Their image was fl awless, mysterious and powerful. Conny Plank produced it. They are German — what more do you want? Even 27 years later, I fi nd this completely modern and potent. D.A.F. managed to make very sexual music with very few elements, which to me is the spirit of funk. The only downside is women hate it, and the women that do like it…. watch out!
“From a production angle, D.A.F. really inspired me because their music seems possible, even realistic to make. It’s not like when I listen to Van or Prince
or Leonard. D.A.F. have a passion and an honesty that I relate to, and the relentless attention to the groove, the always subtly changing sequence, and the percussive male delivery – and the leather. It’s hard to believe that it was so long ago, and still owns its genre. For me this is what dance music should be.”

The Prodigy

April 6, 2009

The Prodigy is an English electronic music group formed by Liam Howlett, in 1990, in Braintree, Essex, England. They have sold over 16 million records worldwide which is unequaled in dance music history.
The Prodigy
Their music consists of various styles ranging from rave, hardcore, and breakbeat in the early 1990s to alternative rock and big beat with punk vocal elements in later times. The current band members include Liam Howlett (composer/keyboards), Keith Flint (dancer/vocalist) and Maxim (MC/vocalist). Leeroy Thornhill (dancer/very occasional live keyboards) was a member of the band from 1990 to 2000, as well was a female dancer/vocalist called Sharky who left the band during their early period. The Prodigy first emerged on the underground rave scene in the early 1990s, and have since then achieved immense popularity and worldwide renown. Some of their most popular songs include “Charly”, “PlayOut of Space”, “No Good (Start the Dance)”, “Voodoo People”, “Firestarter”, “PlayBreathe” and “PlaySmack My Bitch Up”.

The name displayed on album covers changed from “The Prodigy” to “Prodigy” between Music for the “Jilted Generation” and “The Fat of the Land” in 1997 and back again with the release of “Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned” in 2004. However, Howlett has stated that the title has always been “The Prodigy”. The change was made only to fit within the displayed logo, according to Howlett.

Maxim originally began as an MC for the band before doing vocals on ’Poison’, a track on their second album Music For the Jilted Generation and then several others on Fat of the Land. He remains a member as an MC at the live shows.

Keith Flint began as a dancer for the band before moving on to become a vocalist initially on the track Firestarter but then for several others on the third album Fat of the Land. Flint was probably the most visually recognisable member of the band and considered by many to be the frontman though he has very little input to writing the songs. He still sings with the live show but had no input on the last album. He also wrote the single ‘Baby’s Got a Temper’.

Leeroy Thornhill was a member of the band from 1990 to 2000 as a dancer, and could often be found playing keyboards live during songs while Liam was playing Timbales. He is often seen opening for the band live as a DJ and tours regularly on his own.

current lineup:

Liam Howlett – keyboards, programming
Keith Flint – dancer, vocal
Maxim – MC, vocal

previous members:

Leeroy Thornhill – dancer, occasional live Keyboardist
Sharky – vocal, dancer
